Currency markup calculator

Most of the cost is not the stated fee but the gap between the rate you get and the interbank rate. Compare the two rates to see the real markup.

Take the interbank rate from a neutral source at the moment of payment. If a card terminal offers to bill you in your home currency, decline: terminal conversion nearly always carries a wider markup than your own bank.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hidden markup?

The gap between the interbank rate and the rate applied to you, as a percentage. A "zero fee" service with a 3% markup costs more than one with a 0.5% fee and no markup.

When is the markup widest?

At weekends and outside trading hours, when the market is shut and providers price in the risk. On large amounts it is worth waiting until Monday.

What is dynamic currency conversion?

When the terminal or website shows the amount in your own currency and converts it itself. It costs more, every time. Always choose the local currency.
